Natalie Imbruglia has proven to be a woman of multiple talents. Most well-known for her smash hit single "Torn," she is known by fans around the world. Beginning her career as an actress, she landed her first role at the young age of 16, starring as an actress in a television advertisement for the popular Australian snack Twisties. Shortly thereafter she was cast as a regular on the Australian soap opera Neighbors, in which she acted for two years. Though this experience likely was the launching pad of her entertainment career, it was not until 1997 that she would become a worldwide name in the entertainment industry.
Imbruglia's hit single "Torn," was released around the globe and received by enthusiastic listeners. Singled out as the best radio single of the 1990s on Rick Dee's 2000 Millenium Countdown Show, "Torn" was one of the most popular songs of the decade. Quickly attaining number one on the Billboard charts, the single had staying power, with a run of 14 weeks. Selling over a million copies in just the United Kingdom, it was also the number one song for fourteen weeks on the UK music single charts. Many experts concur that it would have broken records in the US if not for technicalities in the eligibility which have since been eliminated.
The album Left of the Middle debuted in December of 1997 and was certified platinum in just four weeks, after selling more than 350,000 copies in the first three weeks of release. Since then it has sold more than six million records and has been certified double platinum. Breaking the records of the highest selling album debut by a female artist of her genre, it even outperformed such artists as Alanis Morissette, Meredith Brooks, and Fiona Apple. Though the other singles released from this album did not garner the attention of "Torn," this was undoubtedly an historic debut.
Additional albums have since been released by Natalie Imbruglia, embraced by her fans as her musical evolution continued. Her album White Lilies Island, debuting in 2001, sold over a million copies. In this album Natalie Imbruglia explored other artistic avenues of music, with two of the singles making the Top 100 lists in the United Kingdom and United States. She followed this album with Counting Down the Days, which included the single "Shiver." This song was soon to become the most played song on the radio in 2005. More recently, the album Come to Life was released to worldwide audiences.
In addition to singing, Imbruglia has also appeared in select movies. In 2003 she played a supporting role in Johnny English, followed by the 2009 film Closed for Winter. Natalie Imbruglia was nominated for an Asian Festival of First Films award for Best Actress in Closed for Winter, and was a L'Oreal worldwide spokesperson from 2002 to 2006. Natalie Imbruglia has also lent her musician's ear as a judge on the X Factor and voice-acted the part of Koala in the animated flick Legend of the Lost Tribe. Based on her success thus far, fans await her next project.
